Sometimes We’re Too Afraid

I saw something on the forest path.

“A snake!”
My heart skipped a beat.

But when I looked more closely, it turned out to be a slow worm.
Not a snake. No danger.
Just a legless lizard, harmless and still.

It made me think.

Sometimes I react out of fear,
before I even know if what I feel is true.
Often, we’re more afraid than we need to be.

And it’s not just creatures in the grass.
Sometimes something hard crosses our path.
Heavy. Unexpected.
And our first thought might be:
this is too much. help, I’m scared... I’ll never get through this.

But we don’t have to carry it alone.
God sees it.
He knows our fear, our breathlessness, our questions.
He doesn’t always take the weight away right away.
But He stays close.

And I remind myself: this is where I need to abide.

That word — abide — is the one I chose (or maybe it chose me) this year.
It calls me back, again and again.
Not to rush, not to flee, not to fix —
but simply to stay with Him.
To remain in His nearness, especially when I feel overwhelmed.

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”
Psalm 56:4

🧠 What looks like a “snake” in your life right now—something that startles you, but might not be as dangerous as it seems?

  1. Um. That's a snake. Worms do not have mouths and eyes. Also, worms are segmented. Run, girl! Like me. πŸ’ƒπŸ»

  2. Nope — definitely a slow worm (Anguis fragilis)!
They live here in Europe — And guess what? It winked at me!
Snakes can’t do that, right? No eyelids! πŸ˜„

  3. Funny conversation above with our friend Sandi! Sandi, you must not live near the south of the US where we have LOTS of snakes, and also have these kinds of "worms". I've seen them and they startled me too, but then I realized they were harmless to me. And snakes? I give them a wide berth, especially if they are the poisonous kind that we do have here. But we also have many harmless snakes that are actually GOOD snakes. They eat rodents and other BAD snakes, so we want them to stay! Regarding your question, Aritha, "what looks like a snake in my life...something that startles me...but might not be as dangerous as it seems? " Well, probably old age! I'm pushing my 3/4 century mark later this year and sometimes it startles me that I could actually be this old already, and it can be a bit frightening when we don't know what the future holds. But I know WHO holds the future, and I know HE won't let me down, so I can face "old age" gracefully, filled with HIS grace and trust. Great post!

    1. Oh wow — old age as a “startling snake”… that struck me. πŸ’›
Sometimes I look in the mirror and suddenly wonder: how did I get here already? Not in a sad way, but just with awe at how fast time quietly passes. And yes — there’s this peace in knowing Who shaped our time and holds what’s ahead πŸ™Œ.
Thank you for putting it into words so beautifully, Pamela — may His grace surround you in this season, day by day

  4. Aritha, thank you for sharing your wisdom filled thoughts here about fear and how we often become fearful before we know if what we are fearing is true or not. I would have to plead guilty to that one...probably more times than I care to remember.

    1. I feel that too, Dianna — so often I get startled before I even know what I’m afraid of πŸ˜…. Just last week, I had a knot in my stomach about something, only to find out it wasn’t nearly as bad as I’d imagined. It reminded me how much fear feeds on shadows, not truth. Thank you for your honesty — it helps me breathe a little deeper too

  5. Your reflection on fear and the lesson from the slow worm is both insightful and comforting. It's so true how fear often arises before we have all the facts, and how much of it is rooted in the unknown or the unfamiliar. The reminder to abide, to stay close to God in those moments of uncertainty, is a powerful and peaceful invitation. Like the snake that wasn’t a snake, our fears can often turn out to be less overwhelming than we initially imagined. Trusting in God’s presence, even when things feel heavy, helps us move through those times with more peace and assurance. Your words are a beautiful reminder of the strength found in simply being with Him, especially when fear tries to take hold.

    1. Melody, your words touched me deeply — especially because “abide” is my word for the year πŸ•Š️. I’m learning slowly that abiding isn’t about “feeling better,” but about being with Him, even when things stay hard. Thank you so much for your nice words

  6. Aritha, this is such a blessed message with a wonderful lesson within. I did not know about slow worms. Your so right about fear here. So wonderfully spoken.
Thanks so much for sharing with Sweet Tea & Friends this month dear friend. I appreciate you. ❤️
